Prince of Persia is like Pirates and Gladiator… FTW?!

As a movie buff, I’m often not impressed when film makers use other movies to describe their own. To me it beats the purpose of offering something new when you say it’s like this and that. But that’s me..
I also happen to be a Prince of Persia player from back when computers were so pixelated you couldn’t tell the prince of Persia from the Aladdin genie. So even if screenwriter Jordon Mechner told MTV that the movie is a lot like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Gladiator, I think in this age, you’ll be able to tell the difference.
“Prince of Persia” isn’t just going to be like “Pirates” in terms of scope and tone, the newest Disney/Bruckheimer tag-team is actually going to “do for Arabian Nights movies what ‘Pirates’ did for pirate movies,”
I’d say it’s basically ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ with maybe a half-step towards ‘Gladiator.’”
“There’ll certainly be a lot of stunts, a lot of special effects. I mean it’s Jerry Bruckheimer!” Mechner insisted. “They’re shooting in the deserts of Morocco. The scope of this is going to be massive. It’s really spectacular.”
“Well the movie’s packed with action, so there’ll be swords and horses and all the things that wouldn’t be ‘Prince of Persia’ without. But because it’s a movie, it’s about the characters and character relationships. There’s no fighting for fighting’s sake. In a game, you have a lot of fighting because you’re doing it and it’s fun,” he said. “But in a movie, fighting’s a part of the story but it’s not a movie about swordfighting.”
From that description, I think I got more of The Mummy Returns vibe which is not good at all. However it is a Jerry Bruckheimer movie and that’s quite enough credibility. The Prince of Persia movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Sir Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. It is set for release May 2010.
