I felt as if I’ve been hyping this movie by myself for over a month, but if you’ve ever seen Nightwatch or Day Watch, Timur Bekmambetov is a no brainer.
The concept of the movie was simple - a loser-turned-hero, a nobody turned somebody.. overcoming struggles, and then coming back anew. Reborn like a butterfly, except that it’s Mr Tumnus.
The movie froths with Hollywood, and the artsy farsty in me might beg for more as far as the concept is concerned. Seriously, we’ve been overfed with people like Spiderman, IronMan, Hulk, Bourne, Bond and all those “I’m the man” freaks; I could use something different.
The settings weren’t quite clear either. I somehow had the impression that McAvoy’s office was next to his home (because his bestfriend was fucking his girlfriend), next to his “real father’s” place, next to the cotton mill where he was trained. Or maybe I just feel that way because of this one train that was in every shot. Lolz!
But whatever reservations I had was overshadowed by so many other things that worked - the cool brutality, the action sequences, the number of times James McAvoy said “I’m sorry,” the idea of Mr Tumnus fucking, the wonderful narration, Morgan Freeman saying the word “mutherfucker,” Angelina Jolie’s butt, and the twist ending - all those things made me just wanna sit down and give Mr Pitt a high five.
**No Mr Pitt, you are the man**
The movie has no moral fiber. The hero turns from good to bad and all the good people died in the end. Hence, a well deserved R rating. Even Angelina Jolie was killed by a curving bullet that she herself shot. If that sounds funny now, it wont be when you watch it. This movie kicks ass.
