The recent overhaul that Google’s been doing - requiring members to have a Privacy Policy on their site, limiting site inclusions, having a monthly pagerank update - all this, for me, will help Google in the long run to get quality clicks from their consumers. It’s gonna be quite lengthy to discuss this piece by piece but, since pagerank is my topic here, I dont think that Google’s ranking algorithm will be the nuisance some people already consider it to be.
Just a short history on this: A ranking system has existed for Google since, idk, time immemorial. Over the years people began to game this system leading to bad search results and unproductive ad clicks. Google tracked these people down last year and penalized them, which in turn, resulted in the questioning of their ranking system, company policy, biases toward other people/companies etc. - this questioning came not only from the people’s involved but from the whole geekdom. Google remained vague on these issues, however, this year, it seemed clear that they are improving their company from all corners.
I guess Google is doing the right thing - whether to quell the issues or piss their critics fruther - after all, it’s their company.
As far as pagerank is concerned, I think it’s value hasn’t diminished, but rather, redefined. This year, Google has updated their ranking system once every month which means, SEO-wise, that we all have to work a little bit harder. I dont think the company changed the way they’ve ranked sites (although, I think a PR renovation is in the works as well). In the meantime, everyone might be interested in how to raise their pagerank.
For us little people, here’s an overview:

Excellent post
I have been wondering what will increase my PR other than just trying to create great content and getting backlinks.
It’s nice to have something a little more tangible than write good content and get backlinks.
I can see that going from a PR3 to a PR4 is going to require a bit more work on my part.

This is a good write up. Perhaps one of the blog I will visit often because of its straight forward and simplicity in delivering the message. Keep it up!
By the way, my site has been ranked at PR3. Any recommendations or advice which you can shed to help me move one step higher?

wow! that’s very informative! thanks for dropping by at my site! i would have not known this. Interestingly, I currently have 1,436 of links (if you click on my blog juice), so i guess you’re right, i have not hit that magic 2,444 demarcation line to be on PR4 which was my previous PR before they put me to zero and back up to PR3.

@reyna elena
same thing happened with this blog. I wasn’t even writing reviews but I was brought down to zero. right now though, when I check those pagerank prediction sites, it says that my blog is worth a PR4. I wonder when it’ll go back up. =P

Hi Paolo, thanks for leaving a comment in my page. Your thoughts are very well appreciated. Well, regarding this entry, it was written brilliantly. Very clear and so direct to the point. I think all bloggers should know about this. I was ranked PR3 in January but was slapped with PR0 after barely a month of venturing into writing paid reviews. Until now, I haven’t gotten my PR back. I think I need to work doubly hard. Anyway, PR or no PR, my passion for writing hasn’t diminished at all.

Hi,
Informative. But, a single link coming from dmoz is enough for google to assign PR3 to a site.
Also, PR of the page where a link is coming from matters a lot too. You have not mentioned about that.
Viswa reply on June 17th, 2008 7:56 am:
sorry, you have mentioned abt PR of link from page. Just an oversight …
Paolo reply on June 17th, 2008 11:59 am:

Thanks for this, I have been wondering how many links we need to increase our website’s ranking. Started the site smallbusinesswebsitebuilders.com about 5 months ago and have just been ranked. Very useful to know approximately how many links are needed to gain higher ranking. Most of the links to our site seem to have a rank of less than 1 or are unranked. Maybe that’s why we have not seen the expected boost from our linking program - via article submission. Noticed that getting ranked apparently boosted the website google position as well.

Thanks for some great website ranking information. Will help in planning my next linking campaign. Would have thought you need far more than 15 Rank 1 links to get a pagerank of 1. Also it seems to take months before ranking changes are effected. While we ought to concentrate on creating new content and building traffic; website position, ranking and SEO seem to be tied to traffic to a large degree.

Please would you highlight on a very important point: Do we “need” to links to sites that are with in our category / Content?

This post was EXACTLY what I was looking for.
One question though, does it matter what PR backlinks you get to your site? For instance, I’ve got a PR3 at http://www.samritter.com but want to move to PR4. Do I need 81 PR4 backlinks? Or do I just need 81 backlinks?
Confused…
